OBREAL is proud to announce the upcoming Second Interregional Dialogue on Education and Development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This pivotal event, themed “Shared Solutions to Common Challenges in the Context of the African Year of Education,” is set to take place in person at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from July 23rd to 25th, 2024.

A Interregional Collaborative Effort

The dialogue is co-organized by a distinguished group of organizations and institutions dedicated to fostering educational development and cooperation. These include the African Union, the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil through the Ministry of Education and CAPES, the Association of African Universities (AAU), the Latin American and Caribbean Higher Education Space (ENLACES), and OBREAL. This collaboration underscores the commitment of these regions to address shared challenges and leverage educational initiatives for sustainable development.

Strategic Themes and Sessions

The event will feature a high-level political dialogue session alongside academic and scientific exchange sessions. These sessions will focus on topics identified as strategic for the development of both regions, fostering a comprehensive and inclusive dialogue. Key themes include:

Higher Education as a Tool for Regional Integration and Development: Exploring the role of higher education in promoting regional cohesion and economic progress.

Recognition, Accreditation, Quality, and Data: Addressing the importance of quality assurance and data management in educational institutions.

Innovating Innovation: Engaging Institutions for Sustainable Development: Encouraging innovative practices within educational institutions to support sustainable growth.

Education and Work: The Role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET): Discussing the alignment of educational programs with labor market needs.

Food Security and Health: Examining the intersection of education, nutrition, and health as fundamental pillars for development.

Digitalization for Inclusion: Promoting digital tools and technologies to enhance educational accessibility and inclusion.

Energy, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development: Highlighting the role of education in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability.

Teacher Training for Basic Education: Focusing on the professional development of educators to improve educational outcomes at the basic education level.

Building on Past Agreements

This event is a continuation of the agreements reached by the African Union and the Latin American and Caribbean regions concerning the higher education sector. These agreements, which emphasize the role of higher education institutions as vectors of regional and continental integration and development, were formulated during the first edition of the interregional dialogue held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in March 2023.

Emphasizing South-South Cooperation

A significant aspect of this dialogue is its emphasis on South-South cooperation. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the dialogue aims to develop shared solutions to common challenges, leveraging the unique strengths and experiences of each region.
