About the 2024 edition in Addis Ababa
The second edition of the Interregional Dialogue on Education and Development between Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe was held from July 22 to 25, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event was co-organized by Obreal, the African Union Commission, the Ministry of Education of Brazil, and CAPES, with the support of the Association of African Universities and ENLACES.
The main objective was to advance a common agenda for development and education, fostering a dialogue on joint solutions to the complex challenges shared by both the Global South and the Global North.
Participation and key actors
The 2024 edition brought together more than 200 representatives from 60 countries, including government authorities, policymakers, university leaders, and representatives of regional and international organizations. This diversity of profiles ensured a broad and plural debate, consolidating the interregional character of the Dialogue.
Results of the 2024 edition
The outcomes of this edition were captured in two main documents. The official report summarizes the debates, presentations, and agreements reached, while the document of conclusions and next steps outlines the collectively agreed directions to further strengthen interregional cooperation in education and development. Together, these materials represent both the record and the projection of what was achieved in Addis Ababa.

Preparatory activities
To achieve the Dialogue’s objective, a series of preparatory activities known as “The Road to Addis Ababa” were launched. These diverse initiatives were fundamental in building the success of the second edition of the Interregional Dialogue.
The journey included participation in international events such as the CRES+5 held in Brazil, the conference “Challenges of the University System and Internationalization” co-organized with CIN, DAAD, HRK, and Baylat, the FAUBAI conference in São Paulo, and the third general assembly of ENLACES, among others.
In addition, three preparatory training sessions were organized, focusing on biotechnology and food security, universities and social engagement, and policy development for higher education. These activities not only anticipated the discussions in Addis Ababa but also helped build a shared vision and deepen the interregional themes that defined the 2024 edition.
