THE THREE SIDE EVENTS
Building resilient skilling systems for the future of work: From evidence gaps to policy development
Labor markets worldwide are in constant flux due to technological, climatic, and demographic transitions, indicating a turning point toward greener, more technological, and more human-centric jobs. This is evident with technological advancements, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is seen as a general-purpose technology capable of transforming industries similarly to the steam engine and electricity.
The impact of AI on labor markets in the global South remains uncertain due to the nascent stage of its applications and societal responses that will shape its benefits or threats. Higher education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are crucial in preparing for this shift, addressing the need for effective curricula and institutional arrangements to ensure modern job creation and equalize opportunities.
Advancing Policies that Drive Gender Equity in Science and Higher Education Institutions
The International Development Research Centre is hosting an open side event to engage relevant ministerial and university stakeholders with emerging findings on the systemic and systematic barriers to women’s participation and success in STEM fields and professions. Via these discussions, researchers will lay out evidence-informed policy recommendations that universities and other national higher education stakeholders can implement in their respective systems to address identified gendered barriers to access and success in STEM studies and careers.
Towards a Team Africa, Latin America and Europe on higher education management? Increasing quality and impact together
Higher education, research and innovation funding is most often project-based and focused on either education or research/innovation. However, for HEIs to fully play their role in research, education and society, their management must be(come) professional and experienced. HEI management also faces a series of issues when it comes to the societal needs of today, such as how to deal with the just twin (green and digital) transition, how to deal with increasing uncertainty (e.g. conflict or pandemics), and how to ensure societal impact. Professional support staff also play a more and more important role alongside management in guiding the HEI through this complex environment. Both staff categories are the focus of this side event.
During a brainstorm session, we will focus on the role of HEI management and professional support staff to collect good practices on their professional development, map their needs and list recommendations towards a future initiative at interregional level.
