Open Science

Innovations, Challenges and Projections for the Future based on an Inter-regional Dialogue

6 – 7 April 2022

On April 6 and 7, 2022, Obreal and the EU-LAC Foundation organized two webinars dedicated to open science. Later, from May 18 to 20, 2022, both institutions brought this discussion to a panel at the Third UNESCO World Higher Education Conference (WHEC 2022), held in Barcelona.

Under the title Open Science: Innovations, Challenges and Projections for the Future based on an Inter-Regional Dialogue, these activities sought to strengthen interregional cooperation around open science, a topic that has risen to the top of the international scientific agenda for its relevance to research, equal access to knowledge, and scientific production.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Directors-General of UNESCO, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a call to foster more open, inclusive, and collaborative science. However, dialogue and cooperation on open science between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)—as well as between these regions and others worldwide—have remained limited. These events responded to the need to create spaces for exchange that could generate new synergies and innovations in this field.
